I live in northwest Washington State near the Canadian border. I have had chickens and guineas for over 20 years. They are free range but perch in a large barn at night with my donkeys. From time to time my birds are taken by coyotes and raptors but that is a risk I have accepted.

This sounds like the farmer across the road. She's got a coop but the geese live in the barn, with the donkeys and horses. We've got coyotes, fox, raccoons, skunk, etc., and she never lost one, but the difference is she's got three dogs.
Ours free range across from her, and we've got two dogs and a plethora of solar motion lights.
