(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens, we were gifted our first 3 chicks in May. Had some stumbling blocks with the coop build a snake and learning a six foot fence won't necessarily keep the chickens put
. So we only have one of the three left.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We now have 6 chickens.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Ancona, Ameraucana, Easter Egger (French Black copper Maran hybrid) Speckled Sussex, Blue Australorp, and Brahma.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Right now we like watching them interact with their environment and laughing at their antics. Eventually though, fresh eggs will be our... At least second favorite aspect.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My husband and I like random little building projects (during the 6 months out of the year we can stand to be outside Texas heat is no fun for us.) I dabble with photography. More of a hobby photographer.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have been married 21 years, we have 4 girls. My youngest was the reason behind the chickens. She fell in love with my friend/bosses chickens so my freind gifted her some baby chicks to raise. We also have a 3 year old Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix named Kokabi that we adopted, and Pandora our 11 year old Egyptian Mau.
Plus 2 Chinchillas that belong to two of my daughters.
My friend runs a bakery/ Sweets table set up business and I work with her as her assistant.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC by googling for information. These past few months trying to figure out how to best care for the chickens This page has come in helpful several time.
Oh and the reason I decided to join was because my daughter swears one of our hens is crowing and I decided I might need some help determining whether or not we have a rooster in the mix.
