(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have no chickens of my own, yet. I manage a farm/petting zoo and have been in charge of the chickens out here for about 14-15 years.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have about 120 ish chickens. We hatch and sell chicks Spring-Fall. We are also part of an embryology program where teachers can sign up for eggs 3 weeks in advance, we incubate them for 18 days, and the teachers takes them to their classroom for the class to watch the eggs hatch.
(3) What breeds do you have?
White leghorns, jersey giants, hamburgs, speckled sussex, silkie of various colors, bantam cochins of various colors, belgian bearded d'uccle, bantam polish, bantam americana, barnevelder. We will be replacing most of our birds next year. Because we do the empryology program, we replace our birds every two years to keep them in peak egg production. It's also fun to switch up breeds when it's time to replace them. We usually keep several breeds from the year before and try out one or two new to us breeds. We are looking forward to trying some cream legbars and some salmon faverolles.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love chicken's personalities! I also enjoy learning new ways to take care of them and sharing the joy of chickens with the guests that visit our farm.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I really enjoy reading, when time permits
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have two goats, a toddler, husband, and two labs. I've had snakes, tarantulas, goats, and several insects previously, too.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I think I stumbled upon BYC when researching information about chickens years ago. I recommend guests/potential chicken owners to this community all the time. I figured it was about time I actually joined
