Hello! You can call me Cheese. Or Goblin. Or "hey you." I'll respond to anything.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new. I first got my singular chicken Thanksgiving day of '24. A family member who works for Rural King brought her as a chick to the family dinner, saying no one would buy or even take her because she had a permanent injury.
Being an animal lover who already intended to get chickens the following spring, I said yes.
Due to her injury, she's a "house chicken," living in a dog crate in my home. She likes sitting on the couch with me and watching The Office. She also hangs out with me when I do garden work and such.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Just the one.
(3) What breeds do you have?
A speckled Sussex.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Self sustainability for the most part, but I also love the rewarding nature of having "work" to do at home. Aside from a garden, chickens are the first step I'm taking towards establishing a mini homestead.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening is a hobby I'm building this year (I grew up with a garden but this will be my first year having my own), but pre-established and off-topic hobbies include reading, writing, and various forms of craft (primarily with epoxy resin).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I got married September of '24, so my family has just begun. We have one pet chicken, Nettie, and a rabbit we call Bugs.
We are first time home owners, trying to turn our not-quite-half acre into a homestead. This year our focus is on the garden and chickens, next year we're aiming for ducks and bees!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC through a quick Google search, and then later a family friend recommended I join. So I did!
