Welcome to my introduction post!
(I apologize in advance if this becomes a bit lengthy, I tend to ramble. Also, English is not my first language so please excuse any mistakes and errors I may make.)
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am not new to chickens as my family has always had all sorts of animals for generations. When I was very little we were living with my grandparents who kept chickens, ducks, fowls, rabbits, pigeons, and probably more that I can't remember at the moment. Once we moved I really missed all the animals and eventually, when I was in middle school, my grandpa built me a chicken coop and run, and I got my very first flock. Ever since then I have been in love with chickens, and in my teenage years I absolutely fell in love with Naked Necks who are still my favorites to this day.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now we only have three lovely girls because our rooster and his other ladies got re-homed. The next generation is currently only about 2 months old, I'll see which girls I like most once they get older and are ready to be introduced to our trio.
(3) What breeds do you have?
My trio consists of two Naked Necks and one other mix, but all three of them come from my grandma's flock, just different generations. My grandma loves Delawares and Orpingtons, as well as naked Necks, so she has a mixed flock with all gorgeous hens and roosters.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The chickens themselves, obviously. They are beautiful, smart, curious, and overall great animals. Of course it is good to have plenty of eggs, but I simply love watching them live their best life in our yard.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My other hobbies are less outdoorsy, so to say. I've always wanted to become an author, so I write as much as I can and I research. I also play video games. Animals are pretty much the only hobby that actually makes me move around a bit so I think it's good for my health too!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My mom is also in love with chickens - or, to be exact, with all birds. She always says she should have become an ornithologist, and I think it would fit her perfectly. I think I got my fascination with chickens from her.
We have a cat who is an absolute diva but loves working and keeping the mice and rats away from our chicken feed. We also own two smaller dogs who have a great relationship with our hens - they love watching the girls walk around whenever we let them out in the big yard, and they make sure everyone is safe (not that there is any danger, our area barely has any predators that could harm our chickens).
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I only found out about BYC a few days ago. When I was younger and started reading online I didn't speak any English, and unfortunately my mother tongue didn't really have forums like this. Now that I'm planning on expanding my current flock and wanting to get new breeds I started researching and stumbled upon the community. I usually don't interact online, but I couldn't help myself this time.
