New to the site. Fairly new chicken mama. We’ve had our girls since Feb 2024. We have all Golden Buffs and are in northern Michigan. I just lost one of my girls this morning to what I believe was being egg bound. I did all I know how to do but trying to learn in case it happens again. Feeling sad today.

I’m hoping to gain knowledge. At least my girl went out relaxed and with me. Poor baby. I did the warm water Epsom salts bath for about 20 minutes, which is what I’ve read online time and time again. She was calm and relaxed throughout. I wrapped her in a towel and gently pat dried her. Put her in a crate to let her just relax. She laid on her side, poo’d and then passed. So sad. I’m trying to learn from what I did wrong. I noticed her acting different yesterday but she was moving around and drinking water so I just watched her. This morning she was not as good. I’m thinking that I should have done something sooner.

Welcome to BYC! I also am very sorry for your loss. I hear you saying you want to learn how to prevent this from happening in the future., what feed do you use and are you giving a calcium supplement like crushed oyster shell on the side?
I use calcium gluconate for an egg bound duck, but for a chicken, I give a calcium citrate with D3 tablet . I think there’s an article about it in the learning center here…

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

So sorry for your loss. :hugs @Jenbirdee is right about the Calcium Citrate +D3 for if it happens again. Just give a whole one once a day for a few days. Otherwise, having a separate dish of oyster shell for the hens should help prevent it.

We're glad you're here!
