Introduction

I missed this question template:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Pretty new. Most of my coworkers have poultry and other livestock, but I live in the city and just dove into chickens in the spring of 2025.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 12 hens. I bought 6 last year, lost one to a stray cat about 4 months ago, and got another 7 chicks 8 weeks ago.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Last year I got 1 black australorp, 1 light brahma, 1 olive egger, 1 RIR, 1 silver laced wyandotte, and 1 blue rock (deceased). This year, I got 1 amberlink, 1 royal sussex, 2 americaunas, 1 sapphire sky, 1 mystic maran, and 1 barred rock.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I like getting my kids involved with it more than anything. But I also enjoy tinkering with their setup and trying to make things easier.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Oh that's a long list for another day... Right now, I've been working on making this chicken dashboard website and planning out a veggie garden.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We had some aging pets that all had to be put down, one by one, over the last couple years (2 dogs, one cat). My wife and I have two little humans (I think.. one might be some kind of wild animal).

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I've googled tons of questions over the last year. From coop design, feed, setup, space requirements, bedding, waterers, feeders, etc. Virtually every search either led me to a Joel Salatin video or this forum.
