Hi, I live in Northern Ca., out in the country. I live with my Husband of 26 yrs. 2 sons one 21yrs old goes to College ( lives next door)one 12 yrs we have 4 dogs 2 Jack russel terriers, one Border Collie, a 15 yr old Queensland Healer Jack cross. We are getting 6 eggs a day( had chickens since Easter)
9 chickens,5 red sexlinks, one buff orpington, one -Americona, one black Australorp, one White( not sure what it is) he/she was given to us. I have raised ducks & Rabbits and 3 litters of JRT'S. We have a large fenced in area for the dogs although LUCY our beautiful BC is aloud outside when the chickens are in the coop- which can be a problem when communication is crossed. (She really loves chickens) I joined this group to learn helpful hints for coexisting with chickens & GARDEN/VEGETABLES, & flowers. My yard is not a fussy fancy place it is very rustic Cottage gardens & open spaces. We maintain about 3 acres and have total 20 acres. You would think with that much space the 9 Ladies could find ample grazing without DISTROYING All my efforts to beautify our home BUT........ they even hop into my flower boxes & old Wine barrels. SO i talked to my darlin hubby about limiting grazing time and asked him and my 12 yr old son Wyatt to please watch their chickens but honestly they arent very concerned about my flowers. I have made it my mission to find a solution the last thread about this topic was written in 2010 so i started a new one i have some ideas on ways to discourage the hens from scratching up my Garden. With Fall just bringing the cool weather I will be trying new things around exsisting plants and record on the new " Thread" ( experimenting with ways to keep chickens out of flowers etc) We will see what happens. My goal is to make it simple and discrete, cheap ( use recycled things I have) AND MAKE IT WORK. Hopefully!
