Introduction

Managed to get right old, bedding and water and food dispensers tidy and fixed up the door to hold open. It was propped up with wood, but returned to find it had been knocked away and one HNC out and Theo shut in. Luckily only away a couple of hours, as having exceptional hot weather for us here in Scotland! My ladies are settling in well and scratching away in their run.

If you want to start up a friendship with your hens, try some treats. Mine like all sorts of melon rinds, canteloupe seeds, black oil sunflower seeds, scrambled eggs (which just seems wrong...), mealworms, and any creepy crawlies I dig up in the garden. Being rescue chickens, it may take a trial or 2 before they figure out it's food, but they'll warm up to it quickly. (My hens were afraid of watermelon the first time I gave it to them!)

Already have two new laid eggs on their second day with me! Joy of first taste of my own Hens eggs! Obviously settling in well. Any guidance on how soon to let them go free range, I have a vacant green building lot beside me they can use. How far do they roam if let loose, as while plenty of green space behind me, also near a road( quiet) to the front and I can't block off as it is access down past where their coop is?

Nearly a month in and my chooks are doing grand. In a larger run now with shade and dust bath areas, plus coop. Feels secure and getting two eggs a day. Love their crooning sounds as they settle in and begin to talk to me. So relaxing.
