Hello, my wife and I decided to get some chicks this spring to try something new, and the kids were really bugging for chicks too after seeing some in a store. So we went ahead and pulled the trigger and bought a half dozen chicks at the local Tractor Supply. We got 3 Buff Orpingtons and 3 what they called "red pullets" which seems fairly vague to me (especially since one turned out to be a white rooster of some sort). But so far having a blast. They've been outside for the last couple months in their coop/run and we let them free range whenever we're home. Only lost one orp so far thanks to the neighbors dog getting into the coop

but otherwise all is well and having fun!

Even thinking about finding some blue hens next spring if we can, we're close enough to Delaware and it's my wife's alma-mater so just see if we can find some.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

So sorry for your loss. It is never easy to lose them, especially when it was an accident. But I am glad you are enjoying your flock!

Enjoy all that life has to offer and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the loss to the dog, hope the rest of the flock does well for you!

Welcome to BYC! Sorry about the loss of your Buff Orpington to the neighbor's dog. I'm wondering if your "Red Pullets" are Red Sex Link chickens, particularly since the rooster turned out to be white. Red Sex Link roosters are primarily white with some reddish feathers in the saddle (hens are primarily reddish with some white feathers in their tails). If they are Red Sex Links, they should have been properly sexed at hatching (male chicks are whitish, females are reddish). If you want to post some pictures of them, we can tell you whether or not they are Red Sex Links or some other kind of chicken. Good luck with your flock.

Hello and Welcome! Sorry for the dog issue you are having. I hope you spoken to the owner, once dogs start on birds its hard to stop, been there done that.Great to have you here!

Yes, I talked with the owner and all has been quiet since. (crossing fingers). Also reinforcing the coop / run, should take a bear to get in there now.

I did post some pics in another thread of the reds. Will get some better ones tonight. ;)
