Hi, I’m Karen and I’m a wife and mother of 2 (soon to be 3) kids. My husband and I are originally from the USA but immigrated 4 years ago to Israel
. While it’s been a journey learning a new language and culture, we wouldn’t trade it. We now live in the northern part of the country called the Golan Heights and are starting our small homesteading dream in our community.
several other families also have chickens around us. At this point I guess I’ll answer the questions provided:
1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
- my teen years I lived with my aunt on her ranch and she had almost 100 chickens. She taught me chick care and general care instructions for having good layers. My husband also had chickens as a child but wasn’t too involved with them. We have just started our small flock.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
8
(3) What breeds do you have?
Black Marans and Plymouth Rocks
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
- mmm too early to tell
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
- cooking/baking, herbalism, nutrition gardening, knitting, horseback riding, biking teaching my kids.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
- my kids are still young and at home. We have a dog that’s basically the middle eastern version of a husky and two cats. When I’m not a stay at home mom I’m a birth doula and a childbirth educator, my husband is a filmmaker and manager at a production company but is an amazing handyman at anything he puts his mind to.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
- found it when I was looking for alternatives to using heat lamps for brooding pins.
