Hey everybody, my name is Zingizya Nathan Andrews... 24yr old entrepreneur... Just now breaking into the farming business. Currently I own both broiler and free-range chickens (naked necks and australorps)...between the Two (free range species) i have 18 birds of different ages and 20 chicks in a brooder. aim is to get into the hundreds and supply both eggs and meat to the farmers market.
Other than farming, I'm also into construction, (studied construction engineering in college).
...
the question i have is concerning my chicks, they are 7days old, used to be 21 but recently lost one... And currently one of them is worrying me, I noticed less activity, lethargy and greenish droppings with what appeared to be some kind of stringy thingy hanging out the vent. Any suggestions on how to help the Lil bird? The chicks are in total confinement btw

I'm giving them 25%protein chick starter, I placed them in a 3*4ft brooders layed with about an inch of Wood shavings. For heat I'm using a 100W bulb and a charcoal brazier...i'll try and send a pic as soon as i can get to the farm

Hello, Zingizya, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
What are you feeding the week olds?
How much space do they have?
What bedding are you using?
What is their heat source?
Can you post a picture of their brooder?

That protein percentage is too high for chicken chicks. Can you put them on something closer to 20%?
12 sq feet is also not enough space for 20 chicks. You should consider tripling that space and that might get them through to 6 weeks.
If your coop and run are already built, I would suggest moving them to their adult housing and brooding them out there. But the 100 watt bulb may not be enough warmth and an open bulb is a dangerous heat source for the coop. A large brooder plate or momma heating pad would be much better and safer.
