Greetings Ya'll,
Our names are Chris and Sherri. We live in the tiny community of Timber, Oregon. We are first time chicken owners. We recently started our flock. We received our two, approximately one year old, Road Island Red hens on Tuesday evening. We converted an old 5' by 6' shed into our coop. The shed had three windows and a door. Two of the windows we took the panes of glass out and replaced them with chicken wire. The third window we removed all together and we built the nesting boxes so that they hang off the side of the coop. Then we added two 2x4's on edge across the coop for roosts. We haven't put in a pop door yet so at this time we are just opening the front door and letting the girls out that way. They have a ramp that gives then access to and from the coop. We have a little over a 1/4 acre for them to explore at this time. Our plans for the near future are to add the pop door and an enclosed run for them.
We are hoping to expand our flock soon with some (purchased) baby chicks. We were really excited to get started so that's why we decided to start with a pre-made family. As we said we are newbies and have lots of questions already so please look for future posts as we may need to be "Mother Hen-ed" for a while. Thank you BYC for providing this site and thank you in advance to all who offer your advice and support. Have a great day. DarLynn Chickens.
