The other hens are the same age as the "momma" hen. And the run is a good size. I am going to try today and see how it goes.Hello and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
How much space is in the run? I would let them interact now. Just because one of the other hens pecked at one of the chicks does not mean she was trying to harm it. They have no other way to investigate the new flock members but to peck them. If there's enough room for the broody mother to be able to drive anybody off that she's uncomfortable with they should be fine. If the other hens are her same age there probably will be no issues at all.
I have two sets of feed and water containers. One has chick food the other has layer. Don't have much in there for hiding...any thoughts what I could put in there?Hello, and welcome! You could probably add a few thing's in the run that would be big enough for the littles to be able to hide from the big's if they needed to. Also have more then one feed and water station located in different area's of the run so that every one can have excess to some.
Mother definately has good protection instincts, she often tries to attack me when I get near the chicks!Welcome to BYC. Given enough space and hiding places, I would try the integration while the mother still has some protective instincts.
Wood pallets leaned against the sides or flat up on cement blocks work well. Old lawn chairs, a sawhorse, even (temporarily) cardboard boxes. Just any kind of clutter, as long as it won't fall on anyone.I have two sets of feed and water containers. One has chick food the other has layer.
