Introductions

Hello! Welcome to the BYC community! We’re glad to have you here.

Best of luck with the Guinea fowl! I didn’t know that they’d stand up to the dogs… my dogs killed one of my guineas when it flew into their cage a while ago. It (the Guinea fowl) was only a few months old though, so it was still young and smaller than an adult. Hoping it works out for you though!

If it ends up that guineas were not the right bird for your purposes, maybe you could try something else like geese? I’ve never had any, but I’ve heard countless stories and read so many books and articles of geese warding off predators and unwanted guests, as well as being good foragers… just and idea, but I can’t be sure how well that would work LOL.

Thanks for joining the community, and I hope we’ll meet again in some other threads as well! Welcome to BYC!

Thanks! Those canine feckers are pretty brazen but geese are a pretty good Intermediary between guineas and emu. I will definitely give that a shot if the guineas get eaten.

I think emus would be super cool to have too. They’re super sweet and very friendly with people. They love attention and are very affectionate. I tried to hatch two eggs in my incubator a couple months ago, but sadly one died around day 37, and the other around day 50 :hit. I was so excited too! I ordered them too late in the year so I unfortunately couldn’t get more, but I think I’m going to try again this winter. Fingers crossed I’m able to and that they make it this time :fl

I've never tried to incubate one. I've only known two adults and they we're mean as h*ll. With the prey drive on my dogs though, I think that's where I may end up. Good luck to my poor toddler though.

I wish we could grow apples here. Too many cedar trees.
Broody hens are how my dog learned not to mess with the birds!
On giving it a bit more thought, I'm surprised apples don't do well where the cedars grow. Both like slightly acidic soil but I guess cedars (at least eastern whites) like a bit more moisture thai apples do.

We mostly have eastern reds here in South Carolina. The reason apples can't be grown here is because of the cedar-apple rust. It's a type of fungus that spreads from red cedars (and related species) to apple trees. The fungus spores can travel miles in the wind. Infected trees produce less fruit, and the fruit is grown isn't edible. They also get nasty growths.

Ah. A disease I am all too familiar with. Too bad. A bit too warm for pears down there as well.
