(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm not exactly new but rusty I suppose? I raised chickens as a child but moved to the city later on so was unable to keep raising. Now that I have a partner in crime tho, I think we're going back to those roots for sure.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
The main flock is currently 10 (4 roosters and 6 hens). We have 6 female chicks and 4 female ducklings that are currently being raised, and another 15 chicks on the way later in the year.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Main flock had RIR (Rhode Island Red), Red star, a brahma, a mugellese and 2 that I have yet to work out. The 6 chicks are all buff Orpingtons, the ducklings are pekins and the chicks arriving later in the year are black australorps.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The severe amounts of personality. Who needs sitcoms and soap operas on the tv when there's one playing out every hour of the day in your yard?
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy gaming, coding and app development.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live with my husband and his parents. My partner and I have 2 dogs and a cat while my MIL and FIL have 7 dogs
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I was doing a ton of research before deciding to take on chicks which led me to this site (which has been a great help on several occasions) so I've been lurking around here since about December 2024. I finally took the extra step to join properly after I needed help with a specific incident involving a hen passing.
