Hi Everyone, I am totally new to the concept of backyard Chickens but I absolutely am sold. I just found out that I can have chicken in Rochester NY and so my search is on to find out how to get started and make sure I can meet the code requirements. I look forward to reading through the posts and finding the right breed for me. Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts and expertise.

Reading your code is a great place to start.
Shoot for the maximum allowed by law. Many people start too small and soon want to add more which is difficult once a flock is established.
Then choose your breed based on your climate, personality, egg lay rate, size and color. Bantam or Large Fowl.
Then plan your coop based on number and size of birds.
Here's a couple good breed charts.
