Invasion of the shrews

I thought I should update on this. There have been a few cycles now of everything thawing out and then getting re-snowed shortly after. The shrews came out for each snowfall and freeze, but seemed to get less and less abundant based on the trails they leave in the snow. Now it's back to being like they don't even exist. So, it really is a seasonal event and I'm sure I can expect it again next winter after the first properly big snowfall. I guess I will have to double down on checking for places they can get into the house and also keep traps out 24/7 with bait that works for both mice and shrews (shrews didn't seem to care about just peanut butter; had to be seeds/bugs too). For the chicken enclosure, next winter I will just be watchful for the most obvious sign of shrews in the secure area, which is partially collapsed-in tunnels about 1" wide along walls. If I see that, I'll set my auto-door back to manual mode and pop a trap in the run overnight.
