Besides hardware stores, feed stores, and Craigslist, are there any other sources (not online because of shipping costs) that I might investigate for cheaper prices on investing in two large Havahart traps for catching raccoons?

Or, if you're the handyman type and have built your own, could I please see pictures? Thanks!

Try Duke traps website. They used to sell live traps that were $49 each and if you buy two the shipping is only $12. At least they were last year. They are better stronger traps than the havaharts.

Thanks for the heads up on Wal-Mart and K-Mart -- hubby will be checking both of those in our area tomorrow.

I had never heard of any other type of cage trap than Havahart, so I'm delighted with your suggestion about Duke traps! I found this site:

http://www.traps4less.com/product_info.php?products_id=65&osCsid=aadd3a6e66018a9e181ff5a508e7fd1f

A raccoon trap for $37! (Plus shipping, of course) Certainly a big price improvement over Havahart, if the Duke line is constructed as well for durability.

Got mine at TSC for about $45.

This spring they had a sale on a cheaper brand for less than that, but I kinda like my Havahart one better. Who knows, the cheaper one might work just as well....

I order traps for work from Duke, if you exceed $100 in product costs shipping is free. Check out the HD line of traps he sells, they work fantastic. I do not use Havajunks very much as I have had numerous coons destroy these and/or pop the door open in transit. but if you are only using them once in a while they would probably work for you.

Also we have made our owne homemade trap.. i dont have any pictures of it but i will try to take one tomorrow. We used things just sitting around the house, you will need:
55 gallon barrel
Hard screen (sorry forgot what it was called)
metal sheets
a spring
and any other medal pieces you migth have laying around
We first cut out 2 larger holes on each sid of the barrel, then took the hard screen and welded it to one end. Then we took a medal piece that fits inside the barrel and placed it on the end where the hard screen is. we put 1 holes on the side of the barrel right below the metal sheet inside the barrel and had a long medal pole welded to the metal sheet and weld another pole to the end of that pole and have it pointed toward the side with the screen. Then weld another piece of medal pole to that piece and have it going towards the end with nothing yet. Weld 2 small medal pieces on each side of the opening with tilted sides so medal can go down it. Take a piece of metal and cut out pointed slots on one side and make a medal piece that can slide down easily through the 2 small medal pieces that will keep it in place when it falls and when in the air. make sure the medal pole that goes toward the end with no screen it just barely long enough to where it can hold up the medal piece that slides but it can also go backwards to let the medal piece fall. Sorry if im confusing you i dont know how to explain it but i will try and post pictures soon!
This trap works really well and although we have only used it 2 times, we have caught something both times and right now we are hoping to catch a fox...
