Under the circumstances, that is music to our ears

Maybe he can sit on the porch for some fresh air for awhile and let the other's know he is still kicking.

Glad to hear Gandalf is doing OK! I had a break in to one of my grow out pens the other night. Stupid skunk went on a killing spree and I lost 22 two month old chicks before I shot it. Fortunately I heard the commotion at 11 PM when I was up late doing homework or I would have lost them all. I did loose 9 of 10 of my new Welsummers though.

Fortunately I still have 18 left of that batch and just moved 92 chicks out of the basement. Not really in any danger of running out.

ATTENTION ALL IOWA BLUE BREEDERS!!!

Below is a message from Erin Bilney concerning our plans for this year's Iowa Blue exhibit at the Iowa State Fair! It looks like we've got a short deadline coming up for entries so please make sure to get this completed if you're planning on bringing birds for exhibition!

"The July 14th deadline is for registering birds for the Open Class showing. All IB members wishing to show their birds for judging, must register by Monday, July 14th. Yes, all the birds will be in the poultry barn.
If you remember, on the East end of the poultry barn, where they had the washing demos and crowing contests, this is where we will do our special presentation, a reintroduction of the Iowa Blue to Iowa!
They will provide us with cages, and we will move our birds to the pens around 4:30. This is a big overhead door area that will be open. We can set up banners, have flyers etc, and hopefully get some newspaper and media attention from IPTV etc.
We must persue the advertising ourselves. We really need to rally the troops for this one. Need to find out who has their birds in the "hall of breeds". Make sure we are all entered by Monday, the entry fees are cheap, parking and tickets not so cheap, but you do get money back, just like a County fair.
The program set up is free! They love to have new programs. There is no cost but bird show fees."

This will be a great opportunity for us to showcase the Iowa Blue at one of the nation's largest fairs! They are excited to have us and will be giving us an opportunity to showcase the breed with a speacial showcase booth in a high traffic area. Having an opportunity like this is a rare thing that doesn't come along everyday, so let's make a bang out of this and do what we can to let others seet his breed!

Oh no Kari, so sorry to hear about the loss...so terrible...

Brett and I have our shotgun ready to go because we know that dog will be back. Unless he dies choking on feathers and chicken bones. We think he may have totally destroyed our little pullet Flap. All we can hope for is that dog have justice and get tore up from the bones on the inside. That is how mad I am!

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs and understand they like to hunt chickens. Still...I almost would be more understanding of an animal killing them to survive and eat them, not just kill.

We have 31 Iowa's in the incubator right now and none are spoken for so hope we can get a good hatch.

If you all saw the damage on poor Gandalf, bet it would be a consensus to put him down. This guy is a fighter in so many ways!!!
It looks like his left thigh area and rear end was put on the hot gas grill, poor guy. He may not be able to sire any more babies so we are collecting as many eggs as we can from our three hens the next couple of weeks just in case. However, I don't care if he is able to produce chicks as long as he can walk/run he has a forever place in our flock!

What day is the actual event?

The date and time are Sat., Aug 9th at 5pm is when we can begin any presentation. We will have a special area for this event only, the same area they have the rooster crowing, and the bird wash demo. The show super., Al, (Alnice) is excited to have this happen! She said she has seen them and would like to have a pullet or two she can show or a trio, to help meet the showing demands for the APA requirements.
All exhibition registration info is available online at: www.iowastatefair.org/premiumbooks

I'm assuming wing bands can't be used in place of leg bands? And, when it says no more than three birds per class, does that mean per breed, or 3 cocks, 3 pullets, etc? I'm new to the State Fair, please forgive the questions.
