Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Nice looking babies. Got some nice lacing coming in on that birchen already and the silver penciled chick is just lovely. They're quite something, aren't they? Little t-rexes.

Interesting reading in part 2 of the 3 part PDF e-book "Making New Colours 2" by Grant Brereton regarding gold leakage in silvers.

The male to the left (pic D) however, proves that Sexlinked
Silver is completely dominant over
Sex-linked Gold and that any residual
orange / red in split males is caused by the
‘Ap’ (Non-Sex-linked Gold) gene.

(Photo D Below)

The bird is a known gold carrier, but shows none of the effect.

This photo below the author lists as an Ap carrier, a gene which apparently causes rustiness resistant to Silver's effect, especially over the shoulders/wings.

This bird carries gold, but he attributes the coloration to the Ap gene which extends red and resists Silver's influence, apparently. Will be researching this Ap gene next. :)

When I feel better, I'll get out and get a photo of my Birchen cock. This winter he has gone really red over his shoulders (ugh, I know, but interesting for this discussion). Maybe I can get hubby to snag a photo.

Got a couple pics (sorry, not great ones) that show the shoulders on one of the roosters. Head is to the left, wings below. You can see that rustiness there that really only appeared this year (2nd year). In the past I just assumed he was split to gold as he was slightly yellow over the saddle, but after reading this latest tidbit wonder if he the effect isn't due to Ap instead. Think I'd rather have it be gold, easier to make go away, lol.

I think I've got a start on eliminating the gold, treating it as sex linked. Rex was kept primarily for his silver. I do still have some f3 gold hens I kept for type since they should throw 50% silver chicks with Rex.

I did major shifting of birds today between pens. My older IB pullets just started to lay, so I needed to move them into a pen (they were sharing with some tolbunt polish and my cockerels were farmed into a couple of pens). I need to take some pictures to post. I have three boys and four girls.

I'm fairly convinced it is sex linked, but I also believe that silver can be in some cases with this breed. After all, this is a loosely composed gene pool and until some of the undesirable trais are bred out, you basically have a Heinz 57 kind of bird. My apologies to Jim. :)

parts of sentences are dropping out of the post for some reason. I also believe that silver can be used to overcome or cancel out gold that shows up in some cases with this breed. I'm studying hard to learn about genetics as it pertains to color and pattern, but I do not speak well the language of it yet, so I ask your forgiveness for any awkward sentences.
