Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Shew, got all the chickens on the place tagged with wing bands, tested birds for the next show, got my forms filled out. Woot!

NIPA show closes on 9-5, I think, but they said the entry cutoff is 1000 coops and it's supposed to be a big show.
Who's going?

I have terrible news on the show front!!!! I have a wedding that weekend, and it looks like we'll be there Saturday and not at the Mason City show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HUGE BUMMER!!! I'll just have to make the best of the Iowa City show...........

I set some more eggs yesterday. Denny sent some eggs along that he didn't have room for, and I have 22 eggs from my pullets to put in. So hopefully there will be another big hatch coming along...........

Connie - This pullet has AMAZING color and type! Her nice crisp white head, her heavy white hackles and front of neck are beautiful. The blue-grey color as seen from a distance really stands out on this pullet. What an exciting time for the Iowa Blue! Her tail set is nice and proudly Iowa Blue. Just all around a fantastic example of the breed. She should show very well for you!

I would say it's a bit more spangled than laced. That was something else I thought we should discuss more concerning our standard. I've been noticing that most of my SP cockerels are developing more of a spangled breast than laced. In fact at the moment I don't have a single (out of 23) SP cockerel that has lacing. Now, I noticed that some of Kari's birchens have nice lacing. But can't remember if any of her SP cockerels have lacing. Kari?

Do they still call it spangled when it's white? I was under the impression that it was dark splotches on the ends of the feathers that = spangling. I know it isn't really mottling, either, since that's generally an all-over effect of white, and it's a different shape.

The shape reminds me of this image:

LL

except for inverted. I'm betting the Pg is playing into it, but need to research the rest of what's causing it.

Found this while looking for more info, thought I'd share as it's a nice diagram.

Also came across this EE rooster with a similar white pattern, including the white extending up into the shafts.

Kind of a cool effect. Still trying to find the genetic combo that causes it.

Makes me think he's a Pg/pg and we're seeing a heterozygous effect. Would bet a homozygous would show the more complete lacing. We'll see how breedings from this fella go. I like the extension onto his body, though, more than Ben's pattern.
