Columbus Day Surprise!

About a month ago some of my IaBs went missing. Eventually I found two nesting outback in the brush so every night I snatch them up and take them to the coop. Then I found another doing the same, but she has returned to the coop on her own. Still, I was one short of my original count and in time, I just figured I'd lost a pullet to a predator. That was until about ten days ago, I found a clutch of eggs carefully concealed in heavy brush. I worried about the pullet, but decided to keep at arms length and just keep checking on her. Well, this morning I was surprised to see the pullet hunkered down in the lush green grass completely out in the open. As I approached, she stood and out from under her sprinted five little puff balls! I found the nest and there were two that didn't make it and the rest of the eggs were cold. Now I have some wild IaBs that were probably sired by a wild pheasant or turkey! Just Kidding! I placed a crate nearby with a bit of food and in no time they were in there eating,

So here's Mamma and her brood.

What a great story and happy ending! Those chicks are survivors!

that would be my guess, Kari. We still get a lot of suprises & "varieties" with our hatches - the unpredictability is exciting . . . & frustrating at the same time
Here's another couple of interesting ones - Way too much red/brown for breed standard, but will definately be pretty after they grow up :
