irish wolfhound show PICS HEAVY

I have always wanted an Irish Wolfhound. Unfortunately my husband loathes dogs of any kind and would divorce me if I brought home a dog, especially one the size of his truck.

Wolfhounds are lovely dogs - Yeah their life span is not that great but worth every moment.
I sadly only had half a wolfhound!

Yeap the other half was Old English sheepdog. Molly mop ( Yes her real name - the kids chose it!) was massive and beautiful. The size and colour of the wolfhound and all the coat of the OES. I had her 12 years and she was a brillient baby sitting service for all 4 of my kids. She was a real child proof dog. When our disabled boy pulled her hair stood on her and put his fingers up her nose she never once complained. When she had Cancer age 10yrs she never let on and when it came through her stomach she never showed any pain. (Apparently very Wolfhound) When she got the Cancer back a second time she was a grand old 16yrs of age!!! She passed away with such grace even though the Cancer had spread through her lungs and made her heart swell up and pump so loud you could hear it thumping like a drum. We were lucky the X meant we had a lot of years more than we should have. Here she is with DH. Molly could easily put her feet on his shoulders and look him in the eye even though he is over 6 feet tall. I still fill up when I think of her - no Dog I will ever own will compare with her. She was a rescue and was nearly distroyed because of her size. Since having her we have rescued and cared for a number of other large Dogs sadly none have been Wolfhounds.

kla37-Probably an IW would not be a good choice, mainly because of their short lifespans. Training a service dog, (depending on your disability/needs it may be a little different) is a significant investment time-wise. To have to start over with a new dog every ten years or so I imagine would be very difficult. And while I have not done a lot of research into buying one, the prices I have heard are something like $900-$1000 per dog. Which is why we don't have one ourselves.

IW are fabulous dogs. Before I got a Komondor, I considered the IW breed. What slowed me down on the breed was that they are sight hounds, and I was worried that I might not have enough land for the dog to run. I am glad that I didn't get a IW back when I was looking for a big dog. It turned out that just a year after we got the Komondor we ended up back in a house in a sub-division, so the Komondor was the better option. But someday I would love to live in a place with enough room for a IW. It worries me that I may not ever be in a place where having a big dog again will make sense.

I love all the pictures of these gentle giants. Thanks for sharing.
