I love flowers. The sight, the texture of their blooms, their varying scents: some cloyingly sweet, some very subtle, and some simply smell "green". Then, there are the "pungent" ones. Who can honestly say that they LIKE the scent of a marigold? But the beauty of the crinkly wavy marigold blossoms contrasted against their fringe of dark almost fern like foliage... such a delight to the senses. Today, I yielded to temptation and bought yet an other day lily to add to my collection. It's called "Little Missy". And, here is her picture. I'm hoping she lives up to her reputation!

So, what's your favorite flower, and what do you like about it???

Such a hard question! As a child, I loved snapdragons, their varying colours, velvety textures, and of course the fact that I could snap their "mouths" open and make the talk. One year, I grew some that were over 6 feet tall, and I was in heaven! Then, of course there are pansies, with their happy little faces smiling up at me. Such interesting blends of colour on each one! Later, I fell in love with phlox, the sweet scents and many blooms filling my garden. Lilies- as a child, I only knew of tiger lillies, the boring orange ones that form massive clumps; who knew there were so many different ones to scent the air, with their huge blooms entice you into their world. And I can't leave out snow crocuses, with their bright promises of spring. And cosmos- the light, feathery plants, and masses of blooms in so many shades, and their ability to freely seed themselves so that there are happy little surprises everywhere. However, nothing quite brings me joy like the simple daisy, their bright sunny faces asking nothing, just spreading happiness.

Strangely, I cannot stand irises. I find them hideous, both in their misshapen leaf habits and flowers that look like they are half dead at their peak. Nearly all other flowers I love and welcome!

What a pretty day lily!
I love flowers too and find it difficult to name one or two favs. While it used to be roses, I've decided that there are lots of flowers that are just as beautiful and are much less painful to work with! Right now I'm on a native plant kick- nothing like a field of coreopsis, coneflower and rudbeckia. And I'll have to defend the iris, at least our native Louisiana iris. Here's a pic

You should try signet Marigolds, Lazy gardener! They have a fresh citrus lemony smell! They are a dwarf bushy type with crowded small single flowers.

I actually love the smell of marigolds! I think it reminds me of my childhood. Some of my favorites are zinnias (old-fashioned), violas (traditional Johnny jump ups), dahlias & gladiolus. And while I think stargazer lilies are pretty, their smell makes me nauseous.

I like stargazers outside. They can be a bit strong inside. And who can resist the fragrance of an old fashioned rose? While the newer ones are pretty, many have had the scent bred right out of them. I'm a sucker for short dahlias. Love to grow them from seed. Wish I had a good root cellar so I could overwinter them. Also a sucker for some of the gorgeous iris, and love the new cultivars of day lilies. Newer and prettier ones coming on the market all the time. Many are re-bloomers, double blooms, and fragrant. Love the ones with the gorgeous dark eyes, ruffled or picotee edges.

I have a weak spot for flowers too. As a kid, I kept a sharp lookout for anything I could pick on the side of the road and knew every spot in the yard where something bloomed. Johnny jump ups were a young favorite, daisies are a life long fav, but I am getting to know roses now that I have some. Anyone grow up near beach roses? We used to pick them whenever we found them and shove them in our pockets just to sniff on for later. Aw, and what can compare to the smell of Lilly of the valley! I just planted what I hope will be a cutting garden. I would love to sell a few bouquets from my home. That would be a dream come true, but I am very worried the flower patch will just end up being a big mess. I have such lovely mind pictures of it, but what will reality bring? Sigh... Only summer will tell.

I say, plant them anyway, and then you can wade through the weeds to pick the flowers. All meals taste better when accompanied by a fresh picked bouquet. Besides, those weeds will provide some nice green accents in your bouquet!

I like to plant some flowers at the end of each garden bed. Manna for the eyes as well as the belly.

I know this is a bit of an older thread, but Lily of the Valley!!! Oh yes! I have the pink one growing in a very shady part of my garden and I LOVE them.
My cutting garden has many peonies one of which is Madame de Vernville. Who needs a rose with this fragrant beauty? One blossom can make my bedroom smell divine. My only wish would be for peonies to last longer, but such is the way of things. Enjoy them in the present moment! Oh, and yes, I love my roses too!
