Ok I know how the 12 got into my head. Read the post title!!

well we have to drive to our hens so i can only go up once a week in the winter and my unle usually looks after them but i just want him to check on them now because he only feeds the one handful a day! and i say taht is not enough and he says it is plenty so i was going to fill up my 6 kg feeder and leave them with that for the week and just let him check on them every day and make sure there water isnt frozen

Feeding once every 6 or 7 days is very, very tricky. You'll need to have 12 kilograms capacity for that feeder, that is 20 lbs, for those on the English standard. I wouldn't trust anything less would be enough for a week, for 12 adult hens. My questions would be this.

1. What feeding device do you have that would administer feed, that would hold 12 kilos of feed?
2. Are you confident that the watering devices can last for up to 3 days? I would not be comfortable with anything less than that capacity.
3. Finally, who's collecting the eggs and how often?

You can put their feed up on a rodent proof table. You can rodent proof by putting PVC pipe around the legs so the mice can't get a grip. Put caps on the bottom so they don't just burrow under and climb the leg anyway. just make the pvc so big around nothing could ever get a grasp on it to climb. Once the hens find out the food is up there, they will fly up and feed themselves. That way you can leave as much feed as you want for them.
