Odd question because ik you don’t need a rooster for hens, but it seems odd not having a drake considering I have always had a drake. But do you need a drake, are hens happier with a male?We will be getting ducklings this spring because we got rid of all our ducks and WNAT to start up again.

A lot would say no unless you want ducklings. Everyone has their own opinion. Mine is I don’t think I’d want ducks with out a drake. I have never had a bad experience having a drake my two boys don’t over mate their girls and are not aggressive towards me or other animals. My girls adore their drakes too. I think it’s just up to the one considering it. Weigh the pros an cons.

For eggs and fun and such you don't need drakes.
For ducklings you do.

Female ducks are quite modern women that don't need a handsome man in their lives :P

Drakes introduce more stress for overprotective duck keepers. :p I would worry about overmating, the hens hiding fertilized eggs that could turn into ducklings, accidentally injuring a female, etc.

I will say, though - my drake was a real favorite. He was sweeter, and tolerated touching more than my hen. Could pick him right up and snuggle him. Plus, the wa-wa noise they make is funny!
