Is a fenced off garden cruel?

You better believe ours is fenced. I forgot and left the gate open once and they were picking my green tomatoes.I let them in once it's gone and I throw any culls over the fence to them.

Think of it this way. Fencing them out is better for them. Instead of them digging up all the tomato seedlings and eating lettuice seeds before they grow, they have the ability to eat actual tomatoes and more lettuice that you had them after you grow it for them.

I agree with the others, I have mine fenced off, and the tomato tops, brocolli stems, leaves, etc al go to the girls and they love it! This fall, I will drop down the fence and let them have at it!

Well, (pause), our garden is no more because we didn't fence it. I'm still working on the fence. The chickens loved what little bit was in it and now they love it because the weeds are tall and thick.

I think not fencing your garden is cruel. They really love that dry dusty dirt. It makes for such great dust baths for the chickens and entertainment for the humans they own when the humans watch the chickens bathing.

Oops, this is supposed to be a family friendly site. Can I talk about chickens bathing?

we fence off blocks of the garden in raised beds, we put leaves in each fall between the rows and all summer they shred them til it looks like dirt, then run between the blocks chasing each other like through a maze!

It is the lesser of two evils to fence the garden, rather than whack the stuffing out of the chickens who would dig it up.
