I am new to chickens, hatched some and ended up with 3 roos and 2 pullets. Was able to find happy homes for the roos, the third will be leaving soon, and then I will be left with 2 girls. Does anyone have a two hen hen house? They are just about 10 weeks old at this point. I understand that they are flock creatures, and like to have friends. Will one friend be enough? Any advice for this newbie would be greatly appreciated. Oh and I don't know if the breeds matter, but one is a tiny polish and I have a big hardy looking EE.

I had 3 RSL hens for over a year. They did well together. I think 2 would do fine.Shoot even when I had a hen in the house alone they would do fine.Would start laying eggs after a day or 2.

2 is good. Will only be any issue when one dies, and then the other will be sad. They like being with other chickens . I never really noticed loner hens.Always 2 or more hanging together,or atleast close to each other.Cross that road (loner hen)when you get to it!

How is your flock of 2 doing?

I bought 3 baby hens 3.5 months ago. One turned out to be a rooster and we found him a happy home yesterday. I know the other 2 are freaked out that he's gone. They'll adjust to that, but I was wondering the same thing:

Is two too few?

Pretty old thread here, looks like the other two posters haven't been online in a few years.

Two isn't too few, but it will be if you lose one. Chickens are remarkably good at finding creative ways to die. It's best to have three or more so that predators or freak accidents won't leave you with one lonely bird.

We have a flock of four hens, and I can tell you they will be happy until one passes away. Our girls always seem to be in groups of two and never alone. As long as they like each other, they will never be lonely.

Chickens are social animals and thrive when they have other chickens around them. Your girls should be just fine.

Usual advice is to get at least three chickens, so if anything happens to one...you still have two that will be together.
