Is all dog food bad? What the heck do I feed my dogs then?!?

The best way I've found is to just network with local butcher shops, farmers, and hunters. Local people seem to be more willing to work out a deal when it comes to selling their meat.

Thank you! I was sort of afraid that was the answer. Local farmers and hunters are not so much an option locally at the moment. I need to move out of the city! But, I do have a few butchers I can look into.

For those of you doing the raw diet, do you have any tips for making it cost effective? I am feeding Merrick duck right now and am having the best results I have had so far with digestion, coat, and no allergies but would be very interested in trying a raw diet. But, it seems like it may be cost probative. How are you doing it?

Once you have transitioned through all the proteins, you can get lots for free off Craigslist, from local classifieds, butchers scraps and scraps from deer processors during deer season. I get probably 80% of my meat free. You can also sale meats from groceries too.

I'm on my phone so I can't post links, but if you look at preymodelraw.com, they have have a getting starting guide that is greatly helpful.

Moochie, walk it off. Life lesson: Politicians, vegans, and animal rights activists tell lies to try to manipulate people into doing as they want. What they want is often not good for you and not one of those 3 types are the place to get advice about what to eat.
I have no idea what the motivation behind this comment is, but I just want to say: I fight for animal rights and I have never told anyone what they should or should not eat. It's a personal choice and I don't mind telling people the reason behind what I do and the reasons why I choose to avoid certain types of food, but I have never lied to people or tried to manipulate anyone into doing what I want. If people want to know I'll tell what I've seen and what I've learned about factory farming and meat processing and what they do with that info is their business. However I do not go around telling people "you can't eat that and you shouldn't do this".
A very good friend of mine is a vegan and she didn't once criticise my eating habits or anyone I know off's eating habits either. In fact, she said she'd be willing to cook me a meal with meat in it when I visit her, seeing I'm not vegetarian/vegan.

Many areas also have raw feeding Co-ops that you can join. The large volume lowers the cost a LOT! As someone else saidafter you are feeding a variety of proteins, Crassus list is a good place to get free food.

and if you have some one that hunts, get the left over bits and pieces that they dont want (not the inside though, unless it is the heart and liver, but make sure neither one is bloodshot or contaminated)

No one is putting anyone down for it, just that there are better quality foods out there for a budget than Ol Roy. There can be recalls on ANY kibble of any quality, as they are all commercially made by man with artificial ingredients and preservatives. I don't care if it's the most expensive kibble out there - it's prone to recalls

Please reread all comments.

Sumi, I may very well be wrong, but you do not sound like a supporter of animal rights, but rather, animal welfare. Huge difference between the two!

I also have both vegan and vegetarian friends who do not try to force their diets upon me. Actually...I encounter diet rants more from burger a day types since I eat less meat than they apparently think I should. x)
