Is an egg box necessary?

I've had chickens off and on for years and I have yet to actually build a nest box, or buy one. I just use whatever I can scrounge. You got some good suggestions. The drawer out of an old dresser works well for some. Whatever is lying around or you can get, hopefully for free.

We used 10 gallon Rubbermaid containers with a hole in the side...I wanted something that would be easy to clean in case of lice/mite problems.

My coop is out near my garden shed and I have a bunch of large foam core pots that look like pottery but are very light. You can get them at Home Depot. I usually use them on my porch for annuals. But, now they are making the best nests. I lay them on their side, point them toward the wall about a 1/2 foot away, throw in a handful of clean straw and they love the privacy. The don't roll around because I have a bunch of deep straw in the coops. Use what you have. They will decide what they like no matter what you do or how much you spend.
