is anyone building a coop while building a coop?

That looks GREAT.

You made it sound like you were going to slap something together, throw a tarp over it, put the babies out there and then be one of those to post in the preditor section that something got your babies last night. I'm so HAPPY you're not one of those.

A lot of people have a grow out pen or bigger brooder before the chicks go to the big coop.

Sounds like you're doing a really great and thorough job on your coop.

Good luck with the chicks for their first night out.

As a newbie, I made a cage of 1/2 x 1/2 for my 8 chicks to stay in the garage. It was about 2' x 30" so I could carry them out for sunshine. I had planned to build the coop in the spring when they were getting big! LOL

As soon as i saw how fast they were growing I went to BYC to ask how long I had to get the coop ready. WOW! they grow fast. Before I got them moved into an unfinshed coop, they were pecking each other because they were crowded. The rest is history deatiled at my website linked below.

Build it fast!

I just made a small coop that looks a lot like yours, except it sits much closer to the ground. I figure that little coop will come in handy many times over the next few years. I call it my "chick coop". Right now it is a temp coop for my 12 EE chicks. They're only a few weeks old and are so happy to be outside finally. In the meantime, I am building them a much larger coop. Once they move out of the temp coop, I will have Polish chicks ready to move from their brooder and outside. Once again, it will be a temporary coop until they're older and ready to introduce to my much larger Polish coop. I can also imagine it housing a broody hen and her babies at some time in the future. I've build a small covered run around it.

I just love these small coops... they're quick to build, perfect for a breeding pair, chicks, or even a couple hens.. and with a little help can be moved easily if they need to be.

With all that said... to answer your question... "Always!"
