I was letting my chickens fee range for a little bit but then all of sudden there was a sudden downpoor. So could rain give them ammonia or something?

Well I would certainly hope not! Ammonia is a harsh chemical found in many commercial cleaning products- it the clouds started dumping ammonia on us we'd have to be worried about more than just our chickens getting drenched...

However if you're talking about pneumonia, well that's another story. My hens spent a lot of time out in their run this winter, we live in the Bay Area of Northern California so it get's pretty wet up here. A lot of them were determined to keep dry, hopping around puddles and staying underneath roof eaves. They know how to take care of themselves. But those that did get wet didn't show any signs of illness. So I'm sure you can breathe easily enough knowing that unless you're chickens are prone to extended periods of pouring rain with no shelter, they should be fine.

OK thanks but i just went out there and there were standing under a big tree which i think is oak and over 100 years old so would that be enough shelter for them?

My chickens are beginning to enjoy the rain after this heat. the'll stay out for 15 minutes in a hard rain before heading to the chicken house.

They think it's their daily shower.
