is building sand ok

When I saw the title thought you would be asking if it was good for grit. Some like to use sand for their dust baths, but I find that given a choice my chickens much prefer dry regular dirt to sand to bathe in. I think the sand just isn't fine enough for the chickens to dig in and really work it into their feathers for a proper dust bath. If I am ,mixing material for their dust bath I usually use dirt, peat and wood ash if I have it.
