My great grandfather was a draft horse breeder/ trainer up on the Salmon river in Idaho. His name was Watts Waddington and he was well known. There's even a tributary of the river named Watts creek. I was raised with all kinds of horses. Never thought of draft horses as slow or dumb, that is how the Germans breed their warmbloods that are so athletic!

I’ve always wanted a draft horse but could never justify the cost. They would of course take me to the farmers market with my old cart I’ve got.

You should just get one! You're thinking like a farmer when you justify the cost of what your heart wants! Not a bad thing to think that way of course, but if you worked with a horse it would satisfy your soul in a way John Deere cant do!

I am a farmer though XD! I use kubota btw haha! If I can find a justification for a horse, I’ll definitely get one. Heart is one thing, pocketbook is another.

I know! I was teasing you about being a farmer! I went to college at The Ohio State University college of Agriculture. Graduated with a degree in Agronomy, and havent had a horse since right before school! I totally get it. But you are young, and need to feed your soul before you are too old or tied down to a routine!

Oh I LOVE friesians!!

I love all horses actually but the friesian is definitely a top contender. My mom still has horses but I haven't had one myself in many years sadly. I used to show in the hunter/jumper divisions on a retired ex thoroughbred race horse mare. She was a flighty brat that dropped me more times than I could count and I loved her more than anything in the world. She's currently retired and living out her golden years with her half brother on my Mother's farm.

Lots of Quarter horse people here.... One was amazed when she Saw Katee do a rollback on the fence....

I was a complete novice when I started with drafts. Not novice to horses just novice to Drafts... That whole feeding deal... and dealing with our heat. I had Draft horse people from the mid west who told me They werent suited for hot climates... And that I had to keep a fan on her during the day.... Katee did famously in the heat... Of course as an experienced desert person I provided ample shade and water and didnt work her during the heat of the day... Non sequeter.

the inital expense isnt the killer its feeding. Here We cannot grow anything on twelve inches of rain per year... Except dry farming Oat hay... But thats one crop and you gotto time it just right. It takes a hundred acres to feed a steer... SMH.

But Once you get it all figured out even a Team of Ponies can do a boat load of work. From hauling brush to grading the drive even some tilling and harrowing. But to be honest Draft horses eat lighter... require less calories because of their slow twitch muscle. Unless its worked hard... I never worked a horse hard in my life so wouldnt know how to feed.

They are Cat like in their freedom of movement... Kind and very Athletic too.
Saw a stallion stretch after getting out of his box stall... Just like a cat For legs out Stretching his shoulders till his chest almost touched the ground.
