Is chick grit necessary?

Hi, I’ve been browsing the web for info on what to feed chicks since I might get a few this year. In most articles, it states that chicks need grit, but I’ve also been told that if their eating commercial chick starter, it’s not necessary. So I just wanted to ask, is chick grit is necessary?

Imo it is necessary. The gizzard is what digests the food. Sour crop is a big health problem when the digestion slows so much that crop contents dont empty correctly. Grit doesn't cost much, so I never thought it worth taking a chance.

Grit is not necessary if you are only feeding a bagged ration. I personally never offer grit. My chicks get out on grass after the first week so they are free to dig up their own.

It seems to help a lot. When I first started I read a great article, it said go to the end of the driveway and scoop up some grit. I’ve never bought grit but it helps if you don’t have somewhere to get coarse sand or don’t feel right unless you buy it, they will do best with something. You’ll be amazed how much better they do just putting them on the ground. Blessings

Chick Grit is CHEAP. $8 for a 50 pound bag at many feed stores. If you feed any sort of treats and your birds don't have access to outside where they can find sand and grit on their own, you must add chick grit. The sooner started, the stronger their gizzards grow over time, which can help to prevent sour crop later in life.

I didn't feed grit while they were on chick starter. Their run has a dirt floor so they can peck at that. The layer feed I give them has calcium in it, however, if the eggshells seem to be getting thinner, I toss them a handful of ground oyster shell. They all seem healthy and the eggs are good so I'm hoping I'm doing it right. They seem to prefer to eat their food from the ground so they must be getting enough grit for digestion.

Think of it as chicks/chickens have not teeth to chew, it goes in their mouth to their crop where it's "chewed" ... Grit helps grind what goes in. Commercial feed (crumbles/pellets) breaks down with the water they drink. When it comes to seeds & treats grit is usually recommended. When they "free range" they pick up dirt & small rocks that act as grit. Your choice but grit is cheap & they eat as they need, I offer as it don't hurt.
