Is day 18 ok to lay eggs on hatching rack?

Let's talk about counting days. An egg does not have a day's worth of development the instant you put it in the incubator or under a broody hen. It takes 24 hours for it to have a day's worth of development and you can say "1". An easy way to check your counting is that the day of the week you started them is the day of the week the 21 days are up. If you start them on a Friday the 21 days are up on a Friday.

That's a real common mistake on here. Plenty of people lock down on day 17 instead of 18. And they still usually get good hatches. The eggs really don't need turning after 14 days. The window for losing enough moisture is pretty wide so a day one way or the other usually isn't that important.

Not all eggs hatch exactly 21 days after incubation starts. It's not that unusual for some to hatch one or even two days early or late, especially the first time with an incubator. That happens to me with broody hens. Don't be too surprised if you see a pip early. Don't do anything drastic if you don't see a pip at 21 days. Tension can be sky high during hatch, patience is often you best friend.
