Is dirt considered grit?

I once heard somewhere that dirt is grit, but, I'm not sure if that's true. Dirt seems too soft for grit, but I want to know for sure.

Not the dirt itself but if you have your chickens free range or in a pen with dirt they will find the pebbles in the dirt and they will use that as their grit.

Sand can be but not clay or silt soils. Sand though is not high quality grit. Grit needs sharper edges to grind food well and sand generally has weathered rounded edges. It will work but not efficently.
