is Dumor (dumour) a good feed brand?

I use both. I use the dumor chick starter 20% for raising up the silkies, since they need a higher protein. I also use the purina layer and flock raiser. But lately I have been using the Dumor layer. I dont find any problem with stinkier poop, etc.

How do you know Purina Layena has quality ingredients when all they list is plant by products, plant proteins etc.? What plants or grains???? My feed says corn, soy, oats or whatever. Just curious, as I like to know what is in my feed and if they can't list what's in it, I no longer buy it


Here is Purina's number: 1-800-227-8941You should give them a call and request a sheet with all the ingredients listed if you are interested.
Like I said, I am not a vet or a feed expert. I am just giving my opinion based on my personal experience. Just trying to help newbies with an educated decision on what feed they can try. Maybe it will work for thier birds, maybe not. Some people prefer locally made feed and that is great!
Purina Sunfresh Layana crumbles works wonderful for my birds. I wouldn't change a thing.

I have three choices locally.


Laying Feed
17% Circle O-Feed Mill
17% or 20% Cleveland Feed-Shelby NC Feed Mill
20% Dumor

Circle O is the least expensive and the feed store sells it less than a mile from home. So, it is convenient too.
The hens lay a lot of eggs while on this. This is also sold in the grocery store not much further than the feed store.
It is also sold at Wal Mart (about one mile).

Cleveland Feed-A little more than Circle O. The hens lay well on their 20% bags but, the 17% gives them
stomach upset. On the 20% they lay well but, on the 17% they nearly quit laying.

Dumor is available in Spartanburg SC or Shelby NC (about 20 miles). Stomach upset even more so than Cleveland
17% and they don't seem to like the feed. No eggs and a bad smell. Most expensive

Starter/Grower
17% Circle O-Chicks grow very fast and feather out quickly.
20% Cleveland Feed-Chicks grow a little slower but, do fine
20% Dumor-Chicks grow slowly, have stomach upset, feather out sporadic


The feed stores here stopped buying Purina products because they reached a price point that people
stopped buying. The feed in the stores went bad, so it is special order if someone wants this.

Easy way to find out is have a small hatch of 10 chicks or so, raise 5 on Dumor and raise 5 on Purina for 8 weeks and compare. I raise large fowl birds, and mix my Flock Raiser with Layena for the adults, but only use Dumor for chick raising. I like the idea of Animal proteins in my mix and throw some of the 24% Dumor chick start into the can with the Purina blends. Worst case is the birds don't need the extra proteins and pass it thru. But, since many of my birds do not stop growin well into their second year, I like to boost the protein.

Cindy, Yeah I'm up outside of Reading. I use Brown's mill in Fleetwood. Altough I know they have other mills in the area. I use a pelletted feed they call "Egg Charger" for my hens. They also have a chick crumble and grower. Plus they mill a nice series of turkey feed too.

I started my flock out on dumor feed and they are six months old and seem to be doing well on dumor layer feed now. I can say that my coop doesn't smell bad and due to the weather the normally open floor (coop is 3 ft off ground and floor is made of wire) is covered with pine straw for warmth. And you can stick your head in the coop and take a deep breath and smell just the normal smell chickens have. There is no strong poop smell around my chicken kingdom. I know we all want to feed our pets good feed but really a chicken will eat another chicken, a chicken will eat anything. In addition, I don't think when chickens were free ranging as wild animals before these feed companys were opened that they were so picky about if they got purina or dumor or the dead criiter they found. My grandmother use to just let her flock free range the farm and just give them scratch feed to get them back in the yard at night. I say feed them what seems to work fo them and not what seems to be the popular thing to do.

Lazy J Farms Feed & Hay :

Dumor is contract manufactured by som eof the large commercial feed companies to be a cheaper feed that appeals to the "Farm Store Crowd". It is formulated based on a set of dietary specifications and the business ususally goes to the company with the cheapest price. Unlike full line feed companies or feed mills, TSC and the other farm store companies don't have the ability to quickly change ingredients to meet current market demands, must depend on transportation to get product from the Toll MIller to the various stores, and they don't have their own nutritionists to develop better products.

I've fed these products in the past when I was in a pinch, but you'd be better served by working with a Feed Company or your Local Mill for fresher products.

then switch to Layena crumbles and some extra
protein via chopped hard boiled eggs. as their Wednesday treat.
and they are doing great,
and laying like they should.
