is half inch OSB satisfactry for roof deck under asphalt shingles

I would just get the cheaper plywood. It is stronger and it will hold its shape better and not absorb moisture from inside or outside. OSB is junk that wasn't good enough to make bedding. If i built a house for myself I would probably avoid the osb in the roof and floors.

Simple rely. Yes 1/2 osb will work just fine. No need to over think it.

I have a small chicken house, 4'X8' no rafters at all. So the open span on my osb is 4'X4 supported by the walls only, been there three years in SE La weather no problems.

If that's what you have, I would use it. Like some others have said, paint it or cover it with something to keep it dry.
