Is he a he or she?

We purchased straight run Rhode Island reds 8 weeks ago. I am certain two are male and one is female. This one has my husband and I torn. I say too he sees a hen. Can you help us?

In the phot with two we are looking at the closest. This one also challenges the two males every chance it gets.

Looks like a hen to me! My easiest identifier for a rooster are the cape and saddle feathers, so be on the look out for those. Here's a diagram that may help.

The short comb indicates pullet to my noob eyes. We raised to RIR chicks this year. One of them was quite svelte with strong legs. We wondered if she might be a he. Nope. She's all hen! Or at least she will be when she starts laying (hopefully in the next 2 or 3 weeks)

I'll have to say handsome cockerel. Due to the comb (being a bit on the larger side), the tail and the way you said he challenges the roosters sounds rooster-like to me.
I normally would never say judge by the comb for sexing... But his comb in particular meets up to the other reasons for his personality/stance. I'd assume male. Good luck, God bless! Have a nice day.

It's too young for gender feathers (at hackles and saddle etc.) I'd give it another month or so. If it's a roo the comb should start reddening and enlarging SOON!!

Thanks everyone, this is has red i the comb. It's not as big as the other two, yet bigger and redder than the girl. So we were watching and guessing.
