is ideal poultry good??

personally I will never buy from them again if I can help it. I ordered barred rocks and got black sex-link roos instead and I have also heard that they keep the good chicks and sell the runts or the ones that were late hatches

that is what I was told . I don't kow this for sure but I do know that every bird that I bought from there started laying and after 2-3 months of laying stopped and never laid another egg. it has been about 4 months now and still no eggs from them. They never got as big as the one I hatched myself either. It is just like the breeding was not as good as it should have been. maybe I just got some bad chicks. Oh also received some that had crooked neck also. 2 buff orpingtons and 1 rir that I no longer have any hatchery chicks or chickens we sold them everyone to a friend of dh. He got 38 grown birds for 50.00 we just wanted to do our own from breeders that hopefull did not have hatchery chickens.

i buy hundreds from ideal, ive had less then a dozen deaths, less then a dozen "problemed" chicks, and i have 1 chick thats here that wasnt what he was suppose to be,, so if you go to the "high" end of my numbers,, from a thousand chicks this year, i have had less then 2 dozen problems.

if my math is correct, and if it isn't, someone please correct it, that is only 2.4%.
that's pretty good odds.

i used ideal this year and had zero probs. thought they were great.

I have only ordered from one hatchery and it was Ideal. I personally have had no problems from them. Got my order in one chick did not look real healthy but it was an extra. I guess whoever filled the order saw/knew that one might not make it. I don't know really. All the others were thriving great.
I had a small order so they also threw in "males for warmth" so I got 6 males above what I had ordered. turns out one of them was actually a female. Bonus for me in my opinion.

Now from what I have read I would say ANY hatchery you order from you have a chance of having things go wrong. If you are not happy try another hatchery. Or try the one you had problems with at a later date. You might just be really happy the next time.

Just my 2 cents worth, though it may be worth less than that.

don't get me wrong I am not bad mouthing them If I had to buy from a hatchery it would be them . I hope I don't have to buy from a hatchery again. people are always asking me if my chickens are hatchery chickens. they are not but so what if they were does it make the eggs taste different no I don't think so but we did get a poor quality of chicks from them . Maybe it was just the time of year we bought them I don't know . If I had to choose a hatchery to use it would be them . But you hear stories about all of them so it is up to each one to choose to believe them or not. Oh and they did credit me for the mistake in the barred rock roos. so that was a +++ for them. at least they didn't do like my cornish x's I bought. just about everyone of them were sick and died. no i did not buy them from ideal either

If you don't mind me asking, did they charge you a small order charge for not ordering at least 25?
I'm curious because I want to order from them in Feb, but only about ten chicks.

for 50 chicks or less i think its $7 min/small order charge, 100 chicks is $1 , and i cant remember what they charge me for 200 and over

I ordered from them and hated it. The chicks didn't arrive in 2 days like they said but instead they arrived 6 days later and many were dead. Yes, it may have been the PO but the rude lady from Ideal wasn't with the PO and acted like she could care less what happened to the chicks and was hateful about crediting me for them when the dead ones did arrive.
There are too many really good hatcheries that are very courteous that I will give my repeat business to, thank you.
