Is incubation time for eggs the same when they're under a broody hen as when they're in an incubator

I just read your post about all the eggs that you had to bury! I'm so sorry! That's so sad! And so many of them! I hope luck's on your side the next time! Now I really hope little Oliver Buttercup is OK!
Good idea with the homemade incubator tho! I don't know how the hygrometer thing works but I'd think the little cup of water would have done the trick! Oh those phone people just burn me up! I feel like if I'd been able to get online I could have shared what I read in this article with you and it could've helped!

Oliver is a grey little fuz butt, he has spraddle leg so i have to hobble his legs, other than that he is great, he is walking and eating and drinking a little, by tomorrow he should be as good as new! He has made it through his first night and that is usually the hardest, lets see what he does tonight. I was so devestated when i had to bury the eggs, every day i go and put flowers on the little grave, it is sort of pathetic.

Geez, your chickens are dumb, who wouldnt want to sleep in that wonderful little roost that you made them.

I still have a hard time believing that it was only three days ago that Oliver was in a little tiny egg and now he is chirping all night, i think i will have to move him in to my bedroom so i dont have to keep getting up all the time to check on him. Do the "float test" on the eggs that they are supposed to be sitting on to see if they are alive, if not bury them because mine started to develop a nasty smell, i dont think you should throw them in the garbage, i think it is disrespectful. Dont worry you dont sound like a hippie, i agree with you, our dog had died (he was 14 years old) and the next summer I get little Balto that has really bad hip displesia because he has been inbred so many times ( my friend got him for me from a puppy mill) i thanked her but a couple of days later i told her all about the puppy mills and she felt really bad but if we hadnt gotten Balto than somebody else would have and they might have made it worse because of there ignorance and he could become paralized and then they would kill him if they didnt want a paralized dog, i mean who does? I didnt have time to get the brooder set up with all the egg commotion, i am going to order the brinsea brooder that i was talking about to put in Olivers box because at the moment i have a light over it and i think it bothers his eyes. Once he starts pooping than i will have to bring him out to the garage because the house will stink like poo.

Like you said in your post, things happen for a reason, i was getting ready for chicks in the near future when all of a sudden i have a chick that needs his own little space, the space in the garage that i was cleaning out for my other chicks.I love reading your posts, it makes me feel like i am actually talking to you! I see that i have typed a lot to, so to reward you for listening i am going to send you pictures.

Isnt he cute??
His belly is yellow and the rest of him is grey as you can see.
He loves people every time i put my hand in his box he climbs on it and sticks his little beak threw my fingers and falls asleep.

Yay!Oliver made it out! such a cute little chick too!So fluffy! i'm so glad it worked out for the best! i was so worried when i read that he wasnt pipping! how's he doing now?
so sorry to be so sporadic last few days! i haven't had minute to sitdown! i was able to read your post yesterday on my phone but couldn't log on! I was getting so frustrated trying to figure it out!
So did you get a spot made up for Oliver? Did you order your brooder?
I didn't mean I threw mine in the trash! I couldn't ever throw anyone in the trash, any kind of animal! When I said toss them, I meant I actually tossed them. It may sound bad, but I put them out where the back field meets our pond, it all grown up and has brambles and trees and such. I figure they just fed one of the wild animals. They didn't die for nothing, something else probably fed it's babies. I hope that doesn't sound gross, I'm not trying to be!
Ginger and Georgie have given up on their eggs totally. Bummer. None of the eggs are developing anything anyway, although that mite be because they didn't sit on them enough. I got new pics I'll post too. I got some of the new chicks out pecking around. They just so cute scratching about!
So who went into making Oliver? What kind of rooster do you have? What kind of hens? Is everyone mixes, more picasso chickens? He sure is neat looking! Does he have feathered legs, or is it just the way he's sitting? What color do you think he mite end up? I love trying to figure all that stuff out! Gotta go now, but be back in a bit with some pics! Going to take some more now!

Heres a couple pics of the new chicks out in the chicken yard. They sure are fiesty for being so tiny! I ended up opening the whole coop and yard back up last night. So now everyone is all together. The big ones kept getting in the other pen anyway and no one is fighting, just a few pecks here and there so I think they've gotten used to each other. I've been going back and forth since last night, just to make sure and so far so good! I had to put the older chicks in the roosting room last night tho, I'm hoping they'll start going in themselves soon tho. I made sure they had plenty of room, and they actually used that greenhouse roost I made, so I'm going to leave it in there a bit longer and see if they keep it up.
I forgot to put in that other post that I was so glad to hear that you took in a dog that wasn't "perfect"! Most of my animals are ones that couldn't get a home. There's so many of them that don't get chances for nice people to take them just because they aren't like everyone else.I bet he's so happy he got to have a normal life instead of being in a puppy mill! Those places are terrible! That's how I got that stray cat that was in my attic. My mom drove her over two hours to bring her hereafter she got her from the animal control lady that had caught her in a parking lot. The lady told her that if they catch pregnant cats, they abort the babies she has (too many mouths to feed she told her! so mean ) so my mom called me and asked if we could take in one more cat-like I'm going to say no!-and that's how I got ElliePaws. And her little kittens are such good little cats too! It's awful to think what almost happened to them! Anyway, it's always nice to know there's other people out there who take in the ones that need it!
How's Oliver doing? Hey, I saw something about a lady that has her chicken living in her house! You could always train Oliver to a litter box and make him a "housechicken".LOL. That lady let her chicken have free reign and had diapers on her chicken, I was cracking up.

I am going to keep him in the house i decided. I would be to worried if he was in the garage. I havent ordered the brooder yet either.

I know you didnt throw yours in the trash, i was just saying that i know people that do and i think that even if they didnt hatch they still should be respected. I would like to toss mine so other thing could feed on them but we dont have any wild animals that would eat them. It isnt gross.

Dont get mad at Georgie and Ginger they are focusing on the new chicks now, dont be upset about the eggs.
hugs.gif

Today when i took Oliver out of his box he was really excited and when i put him on his little balnket he started pecking it and then fell over, it was hilarious!

I dont now what any of my chickens/roosters are because my grandma gave them to me before she passed away and i never bothered asking.
I think he will be grayish or black, what do you think??
I unhobbled his legs and one of them looks broken or something, i will post some pictures tomorrow, he has learned to hop around now, i feel so bad for him.

I love pics!! I am glad the older chicks are using that beautiful little green house thingy!
I dont think i am going to be putting any diapers on Oliver!

Oh my gosh, you did that, that is so nice of you, i am sure if the cat could talk she would thank you!
I will post some pictures tomorrow!

LOL! He sounds so cute! I hope his leg's not broken! Maybe it's a genetic thing? One of my brahmas has fused toes on one foot and gets around just fine. I had one chicken that had bumble foot once and she got around on the one foot just fine too. It just makes him all the more special. My favorites always end up being the ones with something different about them!
tongue.png

I'm guessing the yellow color will end up white and the dark, well dark? My brahmas looked like him when I first got them at 3 days old and now they're mostly white with black. I almost thought I got dark brahmas instead of the light, but obviously they're turning out right now. They are some of my favorites too. They are just so sweet, always wanting to sit on my arm or shoulder.

From the day i got the eggs i said that if they hatch they might be a bit "different" .
lol.png

My camera stopped working, i dont know why, maybe it ran out of battery or something or maybe it just broke because i have dropped it so many time, i will try to figure out how to send a picture with my phone so you can give me your opinion on his leg!
We is hopping better every day so i think he will be fine, he is eating a lot now and pooping (and i have to clean it up
roll.png
).
His is probably a brahma mix then!
big_smile.png

I cant wait to see how he is going to turn out!
