my 4 to 5 week old ameraucana chick is making a crowing motion with no noise. does that mean it is a rooster? the chick is also growing at a faster rate then the other chicks that are the same age.

this picture is about 3-4 days old but it is the gray/ white one staring at the camera

Now, I am no chicken sexer, but that doesn't really look like a boy from this angle.( That white one on the far right has a manly look about her though) I have seen chicks make the motion you mentioned without being boys. It was kinda like a neck stretching. Right now, it is hard to tell. Very cute, though!

Thank you, I love 'em boys or girls. I don't know if it's just a mind trick because I have been thinking it's a boy for a week or two now, but the comb looks slightly bigger then the other three ameraucanas. I can hardly wait to see if I am right or wrong on the sex of the chick. And your right the leghorns does have that manly look about her

I agree, unfortunately you were sold Easter Eggers (mutts that carry the blue egg gene), not Ameraucanas.

I also think you're right, that the chick with his head up in the middle of the photo is a young cockerel. That's a pretty wide, pink comb for such a young bird, especially an EE since they don't develop combs early.

that is really disappointing that they are just Easter Eggers they were labeled at Wilco as Ameraucanas. I am OK with that though. we want the blue egg gene in our flock. here is a couple more pictures of him/her

It's unfortunately extremely common to have feed stores and hatcheries and Craigslist sellers selling EEs as Ameraucanas or Araucanas Americanas or my personal favorite Ameraucana/Araucanas (which is like selling a Great Dane/Doberman like those were equivalent things). I only know of three hatcheries, Fowl Stuff, Meyer, and My Pet Chicken, that sell "real" Ameraucanas. So the hatchery is knowingly mislabeling their chicks so people will buy them, then the store buys them and the staff know nothing about chickens, then you have Wilco selling "Ameraucanas" that aren't.

Ticks me off to no end.

thank you guys for all the comments i have learned a new thing or two as well as confirmed my suspicions on it being a boy more or less, and understand that i wont truly know until it is older. and it is a good thing if i do have a new rooster. my rooster now is on his last leg... or should i say eye? he got into a fight with a wild animal and lost an eye over the winter. i just hope this new rooster is as tame and friendly as Henry is.
this is Henry
