I got the roo first - he HAD to find a new home. Brought a hen home last Thursday. The guy I bought her from said she just "got off a nest" two weeks ago. Today, SHE LAID AN EGG!!! My first ever & I'm wondering if it's fertile or not!!! I don't seem to be able to come up with any information in the books & magazines I have, so I thought surely someone here could tell me whether I should leave it in the nest or put it in the refrigerator & wait for a few more & have them for breakfast!!!

Thanks,
Abbie

Whether or not it is fertile depends on if the rooster is servicing her or not, and if he is fertile or not. Either way, you can eat the eggs. If she just got off the nest 2 weeks ago, I doubt she will sit again for awhile. I am sure that just depends on the hen. I don't know how many times a year they will sit on the nest, but I am thinking only once, maybe twice a year.

So I say, save them up and have an omlet.
