Is it a good idea to keep feed in the chicken pen?

Hi Fellow BYC Keepers,

I am new to chickens and getting things ready for my first flock to arrive.
I have now purchased two metal trash cans to keep their feed in.

My next question is...Is it okay to keep the trash cans with the food in them
in the chicken pen? Or would I be asking for trouble. Does anyone else
keep the feed cans in the chicken pen?

We do not have a barn, garage or large shed. The pen is enclosed with
a roof on it. I would rather not keep the trash cans in the house if I do not have too.

Any opinions??

I keep the galvanized garbage cans with feed in them outside. They're not in the pen because I don't really have a pen, as my chickens range freely. The whole back yard is the chicken "Compound." I got bungee cords to thread through the lid handle to each handle on the side of the can(s). If you keep them IN a chicken run or pen, be prepared to have to put your hands on poopy handles, because the chickens will get on them. After all, anything in their pen becomes theirs.

Ok, I don't mind the poop. That would be okay with me if that is all that I have
to worry about. Our pen is enclosed and the welded wire is buried and cemented
under the ground. I don't think that anything will be able to get in, well at least I
hope not.

Thanks
