Is it a racoon?

LOL. You are right! They don't care about peace and love. They care about an easy meal!

We plan on the trap idea. Definitely. Gotta go get one.

I know how to dispatch a chicken. How does one dispatch a coon? Firearm?

We had a coon kill two of our ducks about a month ago. I heard our ducks quacking like crazy ran out and a coon had already killed them and tried pulling them thru the wire. I have been setting live traps up ever since that night. I've caught 6 cats, 2 possums, but no raccon. Monday night I came home from work and went to go check on my girls when I saw that something had been up on my flower boxes on the coop. I investigated and saw coon prints all over the window. He was trying to get in. So Monday night I was determined to catch him. Set the trap and waited. Walked out Tuesday morning and I caught the lil varment after a month of trying to catch him. I finally got him! Lets just say he won't be bothering my girls now. I just hope he was the only one....even though I know that is very unlikely :(

Reset the trap there's definately more. Glad you got him.

If you live in a jurisdiction where you can shoot I'd suggest a Duke dog-proof trap. They work AMAZINGLY well. They are basically an iron pipe with a spring-loaded wire at the top that grabs the paw/hand of a coon that tries to reach in to grab the bait. Use marshmallows as bait for coon only, or use sardines for coon/skunk/possum. You'll come out in the morning to see the villian with his paw stuck in the barrel of the trap; one quick .22 to the head and he dies with little or no additional suffering. These are great as they won't catch house cats or dogs....although if dogs threatened my girls....that's another subject. You can buy them on-line for about $12 or so and they last for years. I keep two baited just inside the woods in back of the coop. If they stay in the woods they live, if they come near the girls, they die. Keeps the girls save; and predators dead.

I'm with you, CherryChick. Hunt is on tonight.
Persistent little critter came back twice more last night after we chased it away at 10 pm... Tape shows it was back a 2:00 am and 6:00 am.
Lots of great ideas for dispatching the (insert expletive here).

how did he pull a bird thru 1/2 x1 inch wire? I thought that was a a good size??? So should I use 1/2 x 1/2? will that even work? I don't own a gun...could i use a pellet gun to dispatch a raccoon humanely??
