Is it ethical to take mean roosters to auction?

I seriously doubt that--where did you get that information? Temperament is heritable, to a degree, and I won't keep any mean roosters here. My biggest stud-muffin is also a sweet, even-tempered guy who loves chest rubs (he's my avatar). He's quite virile, trust me.

I think a seriously human-aggressive rooster should be culled, though maybe some folks would want a mean rooster for free-ranging if they think he'll do a better job protecting the hens.

We will not breed bad temperament Roos - if there is ANY chance it is hereditary than that is too much of a chance. Just as reputable breeders will not breed animals of other types if their temperament is not proper. Bye Bye birdie!

I didn't even THINK about it being hereditary, and here I was trying to sell some of his chicks!

Thanks for all the other feedback everyone, it's very appreciated.

A friend of mine sent 4 of the meanest nastiest most evil roosters I've ever met in my life to auction. She even wrote that on the auction cards and the auctioneer read her colorful descriptions of their vile tempermants. Every roo ended up starting a bidding war! Funny as hell to watch. I'm sure they mostly ended up in stew pots but the guys bidding for them were grinning and laughing.

No they didn't end up in a fighting ring, to big and slow for that kind of action.

Same here. Mean roos do not last long here, even for juvies who starts to attack people or kids. They ARE gone!

Then I guess I need to be concerned about the Polish/Silkie cross (I just listed on here!!!) could have issues?? He still peeps, doesn't even crow yet, but he'll bite my feet HARD. He's just under 3 months old. The other jerk is my 9 month old stunning splash Ameraucana. He actually hurts me sometimes with the flogging, and he makes it a point to get me whenever possible. What blows my mind is that he was so sweet as a youngster and would hop into my lap. He seemed to change overnite.

I dont tolerate any aggressiveness in my roosters at all. I now have a splash rock roo, and an ameraucana roo, and neither one has made a single move at me, even when I go in their pen and take some of their hens when im rearranging things. I had a really really REALLY mean blue rock roo several years ago, couldnt step foot in the pen without carrying a stick, since he'd jump me every chance he had. Sure took the fun out of it for a while.
