Is it humane to drown a cat because it attacked your livestock?

why should we worry about what is legal and illegal when our own government can't even obey its own laws. Do the moral thing, and keep in mind you have a moral obligation to protect your chickens. Its not my place to dictate how you do this, my own moral code probably needs tweaking. If Feral Cats are a problem where you live, solve it with the means that you have to solve it.
i dont think theres anyone on here that doesnt want to protect their flock, theres just humane ways to do it that dont involve violent/inhumane killing such as relocating the animal. as a few ppl have already commented theres a lot of programs in the US that will neuter & relocate ferals, you could even relocate them yourself if you catch them in a humane trap.

i noted that its illegal bc a lot of people care about that. the US government & law certainly arent flawless but that doesnt make animal abuse okay. its also possible that what you believe to be a feral is an outdoor cat & you are drowning someones pet, an animal someone cares for just like we care for our chickens. there are plenty of ways to keep unwanted pets away.

For many of us Drowning is our only safe option. Its how I get rid of Raccoons. There is no other option here unless I risk harm to myself or attract attention from the police using a firearm in an area where the discharging of a firearm is illegal. I have no problem with breaking that law but I do have a problem with the police showing up after someone calls in the gunfire to the police. Drowning is silent and works for this location. If another option comes up I am sure people would prefer a nice easy clean method. If you do not want to drown an animal and have other options I am all for you doing the option that suits you best.

Switch to a DP trap instead of a cage. A sharp rap to the head is more respectful to the animal. An animal rendered unconscious cannot feel any further impacts to dispatch him. I’m not a fan of the overused “humane” word since it’s thrown around far too much and used in the wrong context.

sounds like you guys found ways for you to take care of predators. I found my way and I am not spending any more money just to be "Humane". I too feel the word humane is overused. I do no find the execution of the living to be humane at all.
I do use gas chambers for small animals that I need to put down but only things that can fit in a jar. I will not waste resources to do that with something the size of a raccoon.

To ease your mind so you won’t feel like you’re “giving in” the $10 spent on a DP trap is worth the investment simply because they will far out catch a cage.

What is there to give in about?
I’m saying you don’t need to make a compromise since you don’t see a problem with drowning animals. With a DP trap it would be inherently more dangerous to wrangle an animal and then dunk him. Since they’re more effective than a cage it’s a win.

First of all, what makes a domestic animal's life inherently worth more than the life of their wild/non-domesticated brethren? Because you or another human owns it and it therefore has monetary value associated with it? I don't see outrage over elk, caribou, etc. facing the same fate...

no because we have to take responsibility for said animals, also to talk about elk. here they can be a nuisance. i know of farmers and ranchers who dislike them. talking about big game that can cause issues its moose. they just wreck fences.

but to talk about the outrage over them compared to predators is like apple to oranges.

i know most governments have management plans for big game animals to keep them in check. which is why we have draws and limited tags to keep animals in areas in a healthy number. in other areas where they cause issues might have unlimited tags or over the counter at a first come first served system. also they don't reproduce as fast as most predators which are fur bearing animals.
