My sister and I have been raising a pair of chickens indoors for about 14 weeks. Last night my boyfriend flew into town, making it the first time in our chickens' lives that a guy has slept in the house. This morning , 7AM my rooster crowed for the first time.

Now, it's probably just pure coincident, but I can't help speculating that it was the fault of a second manly presence in the house. Could a male chicken react to the presence of another male, regardless of species? Or is this just a lovely case of correlation-causation fallacy?

ANyone with a related experience? Or anyone else have a story/speculation about what triggered their rooster's first crow?

I have a roo who crows when he wants to come in, go ouot, food, water, a nap on my lap... anything but to assert his dominance. He already knows there's only him in my eyes, but just to make sure, he attacks the back of my other half's ankles.

I have another who likes to crow when you're talking. VERY frustrating. Based on that, it is possible yours started crowing as a result of hearing another voice in the house.

Our Rooster just started crowing.
He grew up with me, but hes more vocal and likes to crow more if I'm near. No idea if its because of the male presence or because I'm usually the cleaner and feeder.
When "grandpa" came to visit from Hainan he also got a bit more vocal, but why is anyone's guess.
When we went back to the hatchery they were amazed that a rooster so young would crow on its own and didnt think it had any male influence. Unless that male was a rooster too.

I think they are all different and it could certianly be a rival feeling for your attention or a desire to protect you.

It might be the *stranger* in your house... He could hear someone in there, and he was letting you know. My little Modern Game Bantam cockerel crows when I walk past the sliding door where he can see me, and if he can hear me talking here in the house. He also crowed non-stop when I had guys here working on the back porch. They definitely will crow if they see or hear something which is either different (STRANGER DANGER) or if they think Mom might be able to hear and bring snacks/say hi/give attention.
